Ultrasonic diffusers are widely available, typically inexpensive, and double as humidifiers. They are the most common type of diffuser sold for home use.

Scent concentration and quality
Cold-air diffusion disperses pure fragrance oil without dilution. The scent that reaches the room is undiluted and retains the full character of the oil as formulated. Because the particles are extremely fine and dry, they remain airborne longer and distribute more evenly through the space.
Ultrasonic diffusers dilute the fragrance oil in water before dispersing it. The resulting mist carries a lower concentration of fragrance, and the water vapour itself can slightly alter how the scent is perceived. In humid climates or already-humid rooms, the additional moisture can also affect how the fragrance settles.
Coverage
Cold-air diffusers are capable of covering significantly larger areas than ultrasonic models. The fine dry mist travels further and disperses more evenly, making cold-air diffusion the practical choice for any space beyond a small room.
Ultrasonic diffusers are generally suited to small, enclosed spaces. Most are designed for rooms up to roughly 20 to 30 square metres. Beyond that, the fragrance concentration drops off quickly.
Effect on the fragrance oil
Heat-based diffusion methods — including reed diffusers with heat, wax melts and some older diffuser types — alter the chemical structure of fragrance compounds as they evaporate. Cold-air diffusion avoids this entirely. The oil is atomised mechanically, not thermally, so the fragrance profile is preserved.
Ultrasonic diffusion does not use heat, which is an advantage over heat-based methods. However, the dilution in water and the ultrasonic process can affect how certain fragrance notes are perceived, particularly more delicate top notes.
Humidity and moisture
Ultrasonic diffusers add moisture to the air. In dry climates or during winter months when indoor air is dry, this can be a benefit. In already-humid environments — including much of India during the monsoon season — additional moisture in the air is rarely desirable and can contribute to condensation on surfaces near the diffuser.
Cold-air diffusers add no moisture to the air. The mist is dry. This makes them suitable for use in any climate and in spaces where humidity control matters, including spaces with wooden furniture, artwork, electronics or sensitive materials.
Fragrance oil compatibility
Cold-air diffusers require fragrance oils formulated for nebulisation — typically pure or near-pure fragrance concentrates without water or alcohol carriers. Using the wrong oil in a cold-air diffuser can damage the atomiser or produce poor results.
Ultrasonic diffusers work with a wider range of oils, including diluted fragrance oils and essential oils mixed with water. They are more forgiving in terms of oil compatibility but less precise in terms of scent output.
Maintenance
Ultrasonic diffusers require regular cleaning of the water reservoir to prevent mineral deposits, mould and bacterial growth. The vibrating disc also needs periodic cleaning to maintain performance.

Noise

For a small, enclosed room where budget is the primary consideration, an ultrasonic diffuser is a functional option. It is inexpensive, widely available and easy to use.

A note on essential oil diffusers
Many ultrasonic diffusers are marketed specifically for essential oils. Cold-air diffusers can also be used with certain essential oil-based fragrance concentrates, but the oil must be formulated appropriately for nebulisation. Using a standard essential oil diluted in a carrier oil in a cold-air diffuser is not recommended and can damage the atomiser.
